A Little Light
for villette
I found the moon by the side of the road
I guess it fell down up too late one night
It seemed pretty tired and it was pretty cold
So I took it along for the ride
It didn't help driving, it didn't pay tolls
Didn't turn my Horizon into a Rolls
But it kept me awake, and that was all right
I guess it means something to shed a little light
And I drove around a little too fast
With the moon bouncing round in the back of my car
I always meant to come home at last
But I never knew it would be so far
It did not know the way and it couldn't read signs
Or ask for directions or pay speeding fines
But it sang with the radio, and that was all right
I guess it means something to shed a little light
The weather report made it all sound so strange
The stillness of oceans, the dark on the plains
So we switched to tapes of old protest songs
The moon knew them all and we both sang along
It jumped out near the exit for Route 204
When I stopped for gas at the all-night store
It did not say thank you or even goodbye
And later I saw it back up in the sky
The moon looks so pretty though it's so far away
Shining bright in the night or dim in the day
It helps me keep going, and that makes it all right
I guess that's what it means to shed a little light
