Making Light

we are making light
we play at love and conversation
as sparrows play at flight

we are making light
by evenings mostly moonless, without stars
we burn almost as bright

as sparrows play at flight
in cities where the sky is always far
and every wind a civilized delight

we are making light
because we have uses for illumination
we keep our hearts in sight

we wish to be beautiful in one another's sight
we play games of imagination
as sparrows play at flight
we are making light
