The Minotaur Remembering Icarus

You'd think I would have known my way around:
I swung my heavy head to right and left
And walked as if I knew what would be found

In this or that direction. Our paths wound
Together, beast and boy like warp and weft.
You'd think I should have known my way around

But we were always lost, and every sound
Whispered back an echo. We just laughed
And walked as if we knew we could be found

At least by one another, faithful hounds.
Of course, he flew away. Of course I wept.
You'd think I ought to know my way around

By now. I saw him fall. He must have drowned.
But I remember only light and lift
He flew as if he knew what could be found

In freedom and thin air. My heart still pounds
When I stand on the wall from which he leapt.
You'd think I would have learned my way around
But I walk as if I wish to leave the ground.
